Family friendly

Activities & Experiences in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire

We have always had young kids at the house and the below are a few suggestions to get out and about and that are ‘young-family’ friendly.

Loch Morlich – a 20 minute drive away and a lovely flat, buggy friendly walk of about 3 miles. There is a great sandy beach here too and a watersports centre and cafe.

Loch Insh – Again about a 20 minute drive. The Watersports Centre is better equipped here and there are some small coves that are sheltered and go for the young ones to splash about in. There is also some good play facilities and a restaurant. The beach is better at loch Morlich.

Loch An Eilen – A real favourite until recently when it has become very busy. The kids love it as there is a nice shallow area with a shale beach, an island with a ruin on it and a good walk – about 4 miles which is buggy and cycle friendly.

The Highland Wildlife Park – Great spot for a family day out. Large enclosures and the only zoo with polar bears in the UK. The snow leopards are pretty special too! Near Kingussie.

Softplay – There is a decent softplay at the MacDonald Centre in Aviemore and also a smaller one at The Coylumbridge Hotel.

Landmark – See activities for more information but small kid friendly.

The Olde Sweetshop in Aviemore on the high street is a firm favourite too.

Swimming – The MacDonald Centre in Aviemore has a large pool and a flume but it is expensive. There is a small pool at the Lochanhully Resort (part of the MacDonald Group) which is much closer just 2 minutes out of Carrbridge on the way to Grantown. The pool is not going to be the highlight of your stay but offers something else to do if the weather is inclement.
